Untouched French Polynesia holiday: Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava

Day 1: Depart UK

Depart the UK from your chosen airport.

Day 2: Arrive Papeete

On arrival into Papeete Airport you will be met in arrivals by our local representative and taken by shared transfer to your hotel for a 1 night stay.

The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 3: Papeete to Rangiroa

This morning, you’ll be collected from your hotel and driven to the airport for your short domestic flight over to Rangiroa, located in the Tuamotu Atolls only a short 60 minute flight away.

On arrival your shared transfer will greet you and take you to your accommodation, home for the next 4 nights.

Days 4-6: Rangiroa

Rangiroa is the largest of the Tuamotu Atolls and also has the largest population in the region, meaning a regular air service from Tahiti Airport. Set home to flat islets and sandbars, rather than mountainous peaks, Rangiroa’s gem is its vast lagoon, so large the island of Tahiti could fit inside! Home to schools of dolphin as well an abundance of other marine life, Rangiroa is a popular choice for diving and deep sea fishing.

Cruising the lagoon is a popular pastime, so be sure to book a trip to take you out to the more remote islets. Head to the ‘Pink Sands’ for a desert beach experience with a difference or ‘Reef Island’ to witness the impressive coral formations that have been created by erosion.

However you decide to spend your time, you’ll leave Rangiroa with a lasting impression of secluded beauty and remote paradise worth exploring.

Day 7: Rangiroa to Tikehau

Today you’ll be collected by shared transfer and taken to the airport to meet your domestic flight to Tikehau. On arrival, you’ll be met again and taken to your hotel, with the rest of today is at leisure.

We think you’ll discover absolute serenity with the next two full days on the island of Tikehau. With countless white and pink sandy islets, coconut groves and hidden alcoves, Tikehau’s ‘off grid’ feeling will captivate you. Pass your days bathing in the lagoon’s warm, clear waters that are rich in marine life and perfect for snorkelling.

Days 8 & 9: Tikehau

Diving and snorkelling are popular activities on Tikehau with sightings of reef sharks and manta rays almost commonplace here. The vast populations of colourful fish including lionfish, clownfish and parrotfish are the main attraction here and they inhabit an underground wonderland you’ll be keen to explore.

You can take a scenic bike ride around the main islet and visit the picturesque village of Tuherahera, rich in hibiscus and bougainvillea. The near uninhabited north-eastern side of the island is ripe for exploring; you can head to the long pink beach on the east and snorkel right out from one islet to the next. This remote wonderland is a world away from the crowds of Tahiti, and provides the ultimate Polynesian escape

Day 10: Tikehau to Fakarava

After breakfast your driver will collect you for your shared transfer to the airport to connect with your domestic flight to Fakarava. On arrival you will be met and taken to your hotel to check in for a 3 night stay.

Located right on the beach, your lodge accommodation offers tropical gardens and 2 on-site restaurants. Half board is included as standard, meaning you have both breakfast and dinner included. The bungalows are simple and clean, each with a private bathroom and air conditioning.

Days 11 & 12: Fakarava  

Known as one of the best diving destinations in the world, the island of Fakarava will prove to be a real highlight of this holiday. Take a leisurely bike ride to the main village of Rotoava, located on the longest continuous ‘motu’ (islet) in French Polynesia, rimmed with extraordinary beaches. Or, head to the far southern end of the lagoon to find an old Catholic church made entirely out of coral, in the village of Tetamanu.

If you enjoy diving, be sure to head down to Tumakohua Pass, home to an underwater valley knowns as Shark’s Hole. This area is heavily populated with lemon, whitecap and hammerhead sharks, making this a popular destination for divers.

With a distinct absence of large, resort-style hotels Fakarava offers pure surroundings and a secluded island feel that sets it apart from the most visited islands in French Polynesia.

Day 13: Depart Fakarava    

After a breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the airport to connect with your domestic flight back to Tahiti and your international departure flight.
